Puerto Rican Born, Bronx Raised Rita Moreno to Receive Kennedy Center Honors

Back in July, the Kennedy Center announced that Rita Moreno, who was born in Puerto Rico and moved with her family to The Bronx when she was 6, will be one of this year’s recipients of the prestigious Kennedy Center Honors which is given to those in the performing arts that have greatly contributed to American culture.

Moreno is no stranger to awards having been the 3rd artist to receive the coveted EGOT: Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards and the first Latino to do so back in 1977, the same year Helen Hayes became the 2nd artist and first female in achieving the same.

1st Annual Bronx Documentary Center’s Women’s Film Series Begins Tomorrow

Starting tomorrow, Wednesday, September 16th and then every 3 days, The Bronx Documentary Center begins its first ever Annual Women’s Film Series (All screenings begin at 7:30PM).

The Bronx Filmmakers Group Celebrates Their 3rd Year Running

3 years ago, several budding filmmakers from The Bronx decided that it was time to form a group for Bronxites where they could talk shop as well as support each other however best they could.

They reached out to The Bronx Documentary Center and ever since them they have been meeting at the space for 3 years.

In celebration of their 3rd anniversary, The Bronx Filmmakers Group will be holding an anniversary party tomorrow evening (Tuesday, September 1st) at the BDC in an informal gathering where you can meet the group and other Bronx residents and creative individuals.

An Inside Look at Popular Batman-Based TV Drama ‘Gotham’ Filming In The Bronx

For the last couple of days, Welcome2TheBronx has had the pleasure of checking out the set and filming of the popular Fox TV Crime Drama ‘Gotham’ based on the Batman franchise.

The Old Bronx Courthouse is serving as the main location set (although we can’t tell you what the scenes are, you’ll have to find out yourself when season 2 begins next month!) with a small scene being shot behind the old Hupfel Brewery on St. Ann’s Avenue.

An Interview With Maria, AKA Sonia Manzano, As She Says Goodbye To Sesame Street

I remember my first memories of watching television as a young child in the late 70s and early 80s. Each day I would sit down and watch Sesame Street which my mother diligently always made sure was on for me.

For me, it was an extension of school since I was already in Head Start at the age of 4 and Sesame Street, with Oscar, The Count, Big Bird, Burt and Ernie, and of course Maria (played by Bronxite and Emmy award-winning actress and writer, Sonia Manzano), were my after school teachers.

Bronx Actor Lands Role in ‘Southpaw’ Alongside Jake Gyllenhaal

Tomorrow, when ‘Southpaw’ is released in theaters nationwide, a Bronx man will be gracing the silver screen in this sports flick that partially takes place in The Bronx (it’s mostly filmed Pittsburgh but some scenes were filmed in The Bronx).

Dominic Colón, a Bronx native still living in The Bronx, plays Billy Hope’s childhood chum, Mikey, who meet while growing up in a foster home. The role of Billy hope is portrayed by Oscar nominated Jake Gyllenhaal alongside the likes of Forest Whitaker and Rachel McAdams who also star in the movie.

Film & Television Production Company, Silvercup Studios Opening Up Shop In The Bronx

And then there were two.

Just four months after York Studios announced the purchase of 10 acre lot to construct a total of 300,000 square foot film and television production facility in the Soundview section of The Bronx, the Wall Street Journal now reports that Silvercup Studios is moving into our borough in Port Morris.
