Melrose Residents Petition DOT & Elected Officials for New Community Garden

For two years now, Bronx resident Victor Maldonado of Melrose and his fellow residents have been organizing to create a community garden on 159th Street between St Ann’s and Eagle Avenues.

Currently known as Hill Street Community Garden, “The lot has been sitting there as an eyesore for years now, ” said Maldonado who is now petitioning NYC Department of Transportation, Councilwoman Maria del Carmen Arroyo, and State Senator Ruben Diaz to push for this dream to become a reality.

Mayor of San Juan Stays In Melrose, The Bronx—Not Manhattan—But Cab Driver Refuses to Take Her There

Rather than staying in a glitzy hotel in Manhattan, the mayor of San Juan—the capital city of Puerto Rico—Carmen Yulin Cruz Soto decided to stay in Melrose at The Opera House Hotel at the recommendation of her friend,City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito according to the New York Daily News.

Restoration of Ben Shahn Murals at the Bronx General Post Office Has Begun

Now that the Bronx General Post Office is in the private hands of developer YoungWoo & Associates, work has begun on restoring the 13 iconic and landmarked Ben Shahn murals in the lobby.

The building, which opened on May 15, 1937 after 2 years of construction, was the largest of the 29 New Deal Era edifices built in New York City. In 1976 the building received landmark status from NYC’s Landmark Commission and in 2013, after Welcome2TheBronx broke the news that the United States Postal Service was selling the property, the interior lobby was granted landmark status as well—a feat that is not easy to achieve.

For a community that has only in recent years emerged from the fires, blight, and civic neglect that once scarred the South Bronx landscape, the courthouse’s reopening felt a bit like a homecoming. “It’s like they are seeing an old family member, long lost,” observed Regine Basha, who curated the exhibit for No Longer Empty. “This isn’t our building—it belongs to the community. We just set up the structures through which we could listen to the stories.”

Exclusive: BronxNet Expanding Into Melrose Bringing Media Studios, Classrooms, & Filming to the South Bronx

BronxNet, the borough’s cable access television station available on Optimum/Cablevision as well as Verizon’s FIOS service and has been operating since July 1, 1993 from Lehman College, is opening up a roughly 10,000 square foot facility in Melrose at La Central which is scheduled to break ground towards the end of the year.
