The New York Botanical Garden in The Bronx will be home to an amazing and unique exhibition called ‘Frida Kahlo’s Garden’ starting May 16th of 2015 through November 1st 2015.

According to NYBG, it, “…will be the first solo presentation of Kahlo’s work in New York City in more than 25 years, and the first exhibition to focus exclusively on her intense interest in the botanical world.”

The New York Botanical Garden goes on to say:

Visitors to the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory will walk through a stunning flowershow re-imagining Kahlo’s studio and garden at Casa Azul (“Blue House”) in Coyoacán, Mexico City. Curated by distinguished art historian and specialist in Mexican art Adriana Zavala, Ph.D., the multifaceted exhibition will include a rare display of more than a dozen original Kahlo paintings and drawings on view in the LuEsther T. Mertz Library’s Rondina and LoFaro Gallery at the Garden. Accompanying events invite visitors to learn about Kahlo’s Mexico in a new way through poetry, lectures, themed events, tours, a Mexican food market, and an iPhone app.

“Frida Kahlo’s Garden will be a one-of-a-kind exhibition that will provide an in-depth look at Kahlo’s work and artistic environment and also celebrate the energy and sophistication of Mexican culture,” explains Gregory Long, CEO and The William C. Steere Sr. President of the Garden. “Frida Kahlo is a profoundly important artist whose work reflects the complexity of the her life and times. The Garden is proud to present this focused look at Kahlo’s work, which examines how it was influenced by nature.”

Thanks to Jeffrey Guard Cortinas of The Bronx Art Exchange for the tip!

New City Island Bridge: A Clam Digger’s Perspective On The Issues

0
Original Monster Bridge design that was eventually defeated.
Original Monster Bridge design that was eventually defeated.

The following is a guest post by City Island native, Tom Smith, and City Island Civic Association member.

I am a second generation City Islander, born a Clam Digger in 1957. My late father also grew up on City Island. I own and live in the house on City Island that my father built with his own hands. There is no one who has more emotional and nostalgic attachment to the current City Island Bridge than I. When I was a child, before the turntable function of the bridge was permanently disabled and the bridge gratings paved over, the humming of cars and trucks passing over those gratings carried down the length of City Island and, on hot summer nights, with my bedroom window open, that comforting sound would lull me to sleep. My parents often reminisced about how my siblings and I would, having fallen asleep in the car during a long drive home from some far-flung vacation, jump up at the sound of our tires passing over the bridge grating and sing out “We home!” My father liked to tell the story of when I was a baby and spoke my very first words. As he related, we were driving over the City Island Bridge with the sound of our tires humming over the gratings when I perked up, looked out the car window at the boats in Eastchester Bay, and exclaimed “water boats!” My first word was really two words, and not mama or dada, but “water boats.” City Island and the City Island Bridge are part of my DNA.

It is because the City Island Bridge is part of the fabric of my life that I was truly dismayed to learn, about fourteen years ago, that the city planned to replace the bridge. As someone active in my community and involved with the City Island Civic Association for twenty five years, I attended meetings and spoke up about my opposition to replacing the bridge. The Civic Association formed a bridge committee back then and tried to convince the city to refurbish the existing bridge. City officials steadfastly refused, insisting that it was impractical and not cost effective. We then asked for a replica bridge. Again we were shot down. When we were told in no uncertain terms, and directly by then-mayor Bloomberg, that we were getting a cable-stayed bridge whether we liked it or not, the Civic Assn Bridge Committee did its best to negotiate a redesign of that bridge, obtaining concessions on dramatically lowering the height and changing other design features. The city accommodated us even though it was not required to. It may come as news to some individuals who have involved themselves only very recently in the bridge issue, but the people do not vote on bridge and highway projects. To think they do is quite amateurish. The best the community can do is lobby and plead with city bureaucrats. Even our elected officials on the city and state levels who were opposed to the cable-stayed bridge could not persuade the mayor to give up the cable-stayed design. So our best hope was to delay the start of construction until Mayor Bloomberg left office so we could then plead with a new administration to come up with a new design. The Civic Assn did so by filing a lawsuit.

When we obtained an eleventh-hour injunction to delay construction of the bridge, the cable-stayed bridge design had been approved by the city, a construction contract had been awarded, and the contractor was beginning preliminary work. Hope of having the design of the bridge changed was fading fast. It is important to note that the injunction against beginning construction had nothing to do with the bridge design, it only had to do with forcing the city to abide by the required ULURP (Uniform Land Use Review Procedure), necessary because use of park land was involved. The design of the bridge was irrelevant to the courts. We were just stalling, hoping to convince the new city administration to review the project and abandon the cable-stayed design. To our joyful amazement, that’s exactly what happened. The city agreed to abandon the cable-stayed bridge and give us what throngs of residents at fourteen years of meetings had asked for – a simple, low-rise bridge.

When the city agreed to change the design, it had a matter of weeks to come up with the new design because they were facing certain federal government deadlines. Some of the many residents involved with protesting the cable-stayed bridge began to talk about negotiating certain aspects of the new, simpler bridge design, but calmer, more mature heads prevailed. Imagine if a large number of residents began clamoring for their own pet design features. Consensus would never be reached and we would have a monstrous cable-stayed bridge built while individuals were still arguing about what should be built in its stead. So it was agreed by those who were actually involved in the process that what we wanted was anything but the cable-stayed design. Neither the community nor its organizations had a vote or veto with regard to what the design would be. Our choice was to accept the causeway bridge that several hundred vocal residents have been clamoring for during the last decade, or let the city go ahead with building the cable-stayed bridge. If you were to survey the island residents and ask which of the two options they prefer, cable-stayed or causeway, you will find that the vast majority prefer the causeway design. That was made abundantly clear during many meetings, rallies, protests and demonstrations during the last fourteen years.

The majority of the residents of City Island are ecstatic that we will not have the Godzilla Bridge, as it came to be known, foisted upon us. We now get to work with the NYC Department of Transportation to help design the aesthetic, decorative features of the new causeway bridge so that it will have a character unique to City Island. The people of City Island and the rest of the Bronx have the City Island Civic Association and the City Island Chamber of Commerce to thank for that.

Billions Spent In Melrose & Surrounding Area in New Construction In Less Than 10 Years

3
La Terraza in Melrose
La Terraza in Melrose

Over $2 billion has poured into the Melrose neighborhood of the Bronx as well as adjacent areas in new construction — whether residential or new commercial — in less than 10 years easily out pacing the entire borough.

The bulk of the money has been centered in the many developments in Melrose such as La Terraza, Boricua College & North Rose Apartments, St Ann’s Terrace, Via Verde as well as the proposed 950 unit La Central Development which is currently estimated at $345 million.

All these developments have led Melrose to be one of the fastest growing neighborhoods in the city as of the 2010 census with thousands of new affordable apartments for low and middle income families.

Some of the developments in Melrose and surrounding areas are:

Triangle Plaza (Commercial / under construction)- $35 million
Via Verde  (Mixed-Use Residential / completed) – $99 Million
Eltona  (Residential / completed) – $16.5 million
El Jardine De Selene (Mixed-Use Residential / completed) -$34 Million
Boricua Village  (Mixed-Use Residential / completed) – $300 million
Courtlandt Corners (Mixed-Use Residential / completed) – $92.6 Million
Courtlandt Crescent (Residential / completed ) – $24 million
La Central – (Mixed -Use Residential / proposed ) $345 Million
La Terraza – (Mixed-Use Residential / completed) $37 Million
St Ann’s Terrace (Mixed-Use Residential / completed ) $218.9 million
Parkview Commons – (Mixed-Use Residential / completed) -$24 Million
Bruckner by the Bridge (Mixed-Use Residential / completed)- $135 million (Port Morris)
Morris Court (Mixed-Use Residential / nearing completion) – $69 million (Mott Haven/Lower Concourse Rezoning District)
Bronx Terminal Market (Commercial / completed) $500,000,000
Mill Pond Park (Waterfront park / completed) $64 million

Not included in these numbers is whatever ends up happening in the Special Harlem River Waterfront District which will easily cost in the billions due to its location on a flood plain and the thousands of units being proposed.

With so much money pouring into the area, what will become of long term residents as these attractive new “affordable” housing units are constructed?  Will they have a ripple affect and increase rents in the surrounding, existing residential buildings?  Unlike other areas that have gentrified such as Williamsburg in Brooklyn and across the river in Harlem, construction here has been for affordable housing but it is only time before more and more private money begins to pour in and the construction of market-rate apartments begin.

There is a big experiment going on here Melrose and perhaps the neighborhood can show the rest of the city and the world that redevelopment  can integrate people from all socio-economic walks of life without displacement.  Only time will tell where this will all lead.  In the meantime, residents can fight to make sure that they are not left out of the equation whenever new developments rise with public monies.

Rep. Charles Rangel Turns Back On The Bronx: Welcome2TheBronx Officially Endorses Espaillat For Congress

0

image

The Bronx may be used to being an afterthought on politicians minds but it doesn’t mean that we have to sit down and take it.

Rep. Charles Rangel of the 13th Congressional District, which spans Upper Manhattan and the Northwest Bronx, has cancelled his appearance on the popular cable talk show, BronxTalk.

This was a unique opportunity for Rangel to address the issues that face our borough in a debate with State Senator Adriano Espaillat and Rev Michael Walrond who are challenging him in the upcoming primary.

We are tired of politicians turning their backs on us but we don’t have to take it sitting down. That’s why I’m encouraging folks to turn their backs on Rangel and vote for Espaillat who will be appearing on BronxTalk.

Get out and vote in the June 24th primary folks and make your voices heard.

Baron Ambrosia Saves The Day In The Bronx; Rescues Cat Stuck In A Tree 5 Stories High

2
penelope
View of Penelope from my mother’s 5th floor apartment.

It all began with a call from my mother around 3:30PM today.  A cat was stuck in a tree — 5 stories high right in front of her window.

Penelope the cat had been up there for over 24 hours.  Calls to animal control and the New York City Fire Department yielded no results for the residents of Christopher Court in Melrose who had been calling for help.

On my way over to my childhood home, I stopped by Engine 41 and asked for help. They told me that they didn’t have the right equipment for it due to how high the cat was up on the tree.  So they did the next best thing and called the dispatcher and asked for a tower ladder in the area to come over and check it out.  That’s when Tower Ladder 44 arrived.  Unfortunately Captain Luisi immediately dismissed the situation and said they couldn’t help and just kept moving.  I had explained that I do know that such an incident is extremely low on their priorities and even begged that they at least try but they wouldn’t as so much stop fully and kept on moving.

After I told the residents of Christopher Court what they fire department said and watched their faces in disappointment, Ladder 44 appeared at the rear of Christopher Court and once again was told by Captain Luisi that, “…they couldn’t enter the property because the trees would damage their multimillion dollar truck.”  Meanwhile, the paths in Christopher Court’s courtyard are very wide and the tree branches have all been pruned up to 3 stories.

Immediately upon arriving at my old home, my mother and I got to work and began duct taping together curtain rods, broomsticks and pretty much anything we could find. We made a makeshift basket at the end of pole to try and encourage the cat to get in but alas, the pole wasn’t long enough nor was it sufficiently sturdy.  Penelope was at least 20 feet away making a rescue attempt from my mother’s bedroom window impossible.

Precious, her family and friends get blankets ready for Penelope in case she falls down.

Meanwhile, Precious Modesto, 32 and owner of Penelope was under the tree with her husband, Paul Modesto and their 3 children, Precious, age 10, Paris, age 7, and Paul, age 5, with outstretched blankets to catch the cat just in case she fell out of the tree.

That’s when Baron Ambrosia, the Bronx’s own culinary ambassador responded to my picture of Penelope and asked, “Is that cat still up in that tree? If so, I can go get it.”

I told him that she was still up there and stuck up very high and the Baron responded by simply saying, “I can climb anything.”  This is, after all, the first man in recorded history to ever swim the length of the Bronx River from the Westchester County border down into the shores of the East River where it ends.

In less than 30 minutes, Baron Ambrosia arrived onto the scene and got to work setting up the ladder to begin his ascent up the tree.  The crowd, both children and adults alike, cheered him on and asking him to be very careful.  The Baron gave me his cell phone and put his wife’s number on speed dial for me, “In case anything happened.”

20140611_184107
Baron Ambrosia arrives on the scene and gets ready to climb the tree.

Once The Baron took a few minutes and circled the tree, assessing its branches and the cats location, he swiftly began his climb.  In just a few minutes he was already up about 35 feet in the air and that’s when the cat began to sway.  We immediately got all the blankets and placed ourselves underneath the cat and asked the Baron to shake the tree and that’s when then Penelope dropped 5 stories and more than 50 feet safely into the blanket and right into the safety of her owner’s arms.

After we made sure The Baron got safely down, everyone came over and shook hands and hugged him, thanking him for rescuing the Penelope who had all the residents worried especially her family.

It’s stories like these that shows what The Bronx is truly about.  We come together and help each other in times of need, no matter where we’re from.  The residents of Christopher Court are a very tight-knit group  always looking out for each other so it was no less than amazing and beautiful that Baron Ambrosia selflessly took time from what he was doing and came over to help strangers in need.

Penelope the cat as well as Precious and her husband Paul and the kids, along with the residents of Christopher Court thank Baron Ambrosia from the bottom of their hearts.

Here’s looking at you, Baron for being the quintessential champion of the underdogs in everything you do. Thank you from the bottom of my heart too.

The Ellen Degeneres Show Picks Up Bronx Man’s Plight To Save No-Kill Shelter

1

image

Four years ago Pedro Rosario took over $70,000 from his retirement plan to start NYC’s Top Dog & Animal Rescue — The Bronx’s only no-kill animal shelter.

The Ellen Degeneres Show heard about his plight and fundraiser this past weekend and decided to feature them on their website.

Many animals end up in shelters through no fault of their own. Sometimes a family moves and no pets are allowed, others become homeless, and then simply there are people who end up giving up their pets and throwing them onto the streets because they weren’t prepared for the commitment of having a furry companion.

How You Can Help

The number one way you can obviously help would be through financial donations, however, if that’s not possible, here’s a list of ways you can do your share to help out Rosario and his furry family according to their website:

Here’s a list of some of Bronx-related news making the rounds on the internet and in the papers:

  2. Chris Crowley of Serious Eats serves up the ‘Ultimate Guide to Buying Italian Ingredients on Arthur Avenue
  3. Van Nest residents are fed up with a wave of graffiti tagging that has been ‘plaguing’ the neighborhood since the neighborhood is no longer represented by Senator Klein who had a graffiti removal program.  The area  is now represented by Senator Gustavo who doesn’t have a plan in place for such issues.
  4. The New York Times reports that JLo’s homecoming to The Bronx was long overdue according to fans (including Welcome2TheBronx who was interviewed for this article on Jennifer Lopez and her return).
