Seis del Sur Returns This Friday With Their Latest Exhibition, ‘Barrios’

Back on a cold Saturday evening in January of 2013, thousands of people returned home to the South Bronx at the Bronx Documentary Center for Seis del Sur’s first exhibition, ‘Dispatches From Home by Six Nuyorican Photographers which took us through an emotional photographic and multimedia journey into our darkest past—yet vibrant and full of life.

This Friday, October 23rd at 6:30PM at NYU’s King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center, the collective returns with their third exhibition which not only brings back the original from 2013 but combines it with more contemporary work focusing on barrios throughout ‘Latino America’.

Bronx Photo League Documents The People of Jerome Avenue; Exhibition Opens October 3rd

From a 3rd generation Jewish shopkeeper, to a Salvadoran auto worker, to an African hairdresser and a Latina nail salon worker, these are the people that the Bronx Documentary Center’s Bronx Photo League have been documenting for many months now for their upcoming exhibition, ‘Jerome Avenue Workers Project’.

Last year, New York City Department of City Planning announced that they were studying the “Cromwell-Jerome” area of The Bronx—an area that doesn’t exist which spurred fears of rebranding and gentrification—for possible rezoning due to rise in population and projected increases in population over the next several decades.

‘Here There, Acá Allá’ Explores the Duality of Living Between Two Cultures; Mexico & America

Saturday, August 29th, The Bronx Documentary Center will hold an opening reception for ‘Here There, Acá Allá’ which explores the experiences of living between two cultures and although the subject focuses on the Mexican-American experience, this is something that the majority of Bronx residents can relate to being that we are a borough of immigrants.

Whether you were raised in an Italian, Albanian, Jewish, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Ghanaian, Nigerian, Irish, or any immigrant household, this is an exhibition that many of us can relate to some capacity.

Hip-Hop Museum Coming To The Old Bronx Courthouse?

After No Longer Empty’s residency and exhibition at the Old Bronx Borough Courthouse, ‘When You Cut Into The Preset The Future Leaks Out’, and over 6,000 visitors—over 75% from the area and not counting youth programs who graced the halls of this hallowed landmark—many have asked what now?

Well one possibility is that The Universal Hip Hop Museum—the only and official Hip-Hop museum chartered by the State of New York—may in fact call the Old Bronx Borough Courthouse Home. A fitting tribute given the fact that The Bronx is the birthplace of the global phenomenon that is Hip-Hop.

The BDC responds to criticism of Chris Arnade’s inclusion in Altered Images exhibition

The following is syndicated via The Bronx Documentary Center in response to criticism of Chris Arnade’s inclusion in their most recent exhibition, Altered Images, which explores 150 years of photographic manipulation whether by altering physical images themselves or setting up the scenes and passing it off as documentary journalism.

The images below may be disturbing and offensive to many. In fact, many people in The Bronx are offended at Arnade’s portrayal and exploitation of vulnerable women in Hunts Point and the depiction of a neighborhood that has already suffered from exploitation and outsiders controlling the narrative which is often not based on reality but often on fetishism.

Altered Images Opening Reception Tonight: 150 Years of Posed and Manipulated Documentary Photography

Tonight, The Bronx Documentary Center brings to our borough a very important and ground-breaking exhibition which discusses some of the most infamous cases of photo manipulation and misleading captions in the media and global photography contests.

Some of the images included in the exhibition are that of Chris Arnade who comes to The Bronx neighborhood of Hunts Point in an exploitation of the most down-trodden in the community to photograph them for his personal gain and fame.

Artist Open Call: Going Out With A Bang At The Old Bronx Courthouse

Boogie on the Boulevard is Back This Year—And It’s BIGGER!

The Grand Concourse, the boulevard of dreams which ties all Bronxites together and is the spine of The Bronx, was once closed on Sundays from 1991-1996 thanks the visionary leadership of then Borough President Fernando Ferrer along with Transportation Alternatives.

Last year, residents and local community based organizations alike, including The Bronx Museum of The Arts and Transportation Alternatives banded together to revive the popular event.

In 2014 we just got a few blocks from 165th Street to 167th Street for just 3 Sundays but this year we’re getting 8 blocks for 3 Sundays on August 2nd, 9th, and 16th from Noon to 12PM!

Kick Off LGBTQ Pride Month At The Old Bronx Courthouse This Friday With a Huge Celebration!

This Friday from 8PM to 11:30PM, join BAAD (Bronx Academy of Arts and Dance) in collaboration with No Longer Empty’s exhibition to kick off Pride month in what is being touted as the largest, “queer pride art and performance carnival The Bronx has yet seen”…along with Queer marriage vows being officiated for the first (and last) time at The Old Bronx Courthouse.

The Bronx has limited venues for the LGBTQ community to come together and this Friday may very well be the largest indoor gathering and event since The Warehouse off the Grand Concourse was open back in the 90’s.
