Welcome2TheBronx to Receive Historic District Council’s Grassroots Preservation Award

Grand Concourse Historic District
Grand Concourse Historic District

This year, along with other organizations and residents from throughout New York City, Welcome2TheBronx™ will be receiving the Historic District Council Grassroots Preservation Award—the very organization who has been involved in the creation of almost all of the 110 historic districts in New York City.

According to HDC Deputy Director Nadezhda Williams, Welcome2TheBronx™ was chosen, “as the 2015 Grassroots Award Friend in the Media winner for your coverage of landmark and land use issues in The Bronx including the sad story of PS 31.”

Historic District Council describes the annual award as celebrating, “New York’s brightest community preservationists…for their dedication to preserving New York City’s fantastic neighborhoods. This year’s Grassroots Awardees work on the ground, in government and online to bring attention and resources to saving the heart and soul of New York City.”

Many of our readers know that if there’s one thing about us, it’s that we LOVE The Bronx and that I, myself, am not afraid to write about controversial issues and go against the grain and Bronx political machine to save our beautiful home.

Whether it’s talking about gentrification and helping save our borough from its destructive impact, the history of our borough, and preservation of our landmarks, Welcome2TheBronx™ is there—all while highlighting our wonderful borough and the beautiful diversity of our people.

When I received the email and call about the award, I was surprised and it took me a day to process what I had just been told. I didn’t even know that HDC had such awards.

To say that I feel proud yet humbled is an understatement because I do not do what I do not does Welcome2TheBronx™ exist to receive awards and such.

We have been and continue to be extremely grateful for all the media attention we’ve received over the past 6 years because it has only helped propel the stories we care about into the mainstream media.

This year’s Grassroots Preservation Award ceremony will be held in one of NYC’s special places and that is at the Museum of the City of New York on Thursday, May 28th from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, “whose exhibit “Saving Place:  Fifty Years of New York City Landmarks ” will be open as part of the celebrations.”

If you’d like to attend the award ceremony and help us celebrate The Bronx, you can do so by purchasing a ticket for $20 which goes to fundraising for HDC so that they can continue to help preserve our neighborhoods, history, and landmarks.

Other levels of admission are available for businesses who would like to take out an ad as well as get tickets to the event granting great exposure at affordable prices.

For more details on the Grassroots Preservation Awards, past winners, and how to obtain your tickets, head over to their website.

A big thank you to the Historic District Council for honoring not Welcome2TheBronx™ with this award, but The Bronx and our greatest resource: the people of The Bronx.

In the Bronx, Art Fills an Abandoned Neighborhood Landmark – Camera Obscura – Curbed NY

Curbed wrote a great recap of what’s going on at the Old Bronx Borough Courthouse and No Longer Empty’s exhibition, ‘When You Cut Into The Past The Future Leaks Out’.

The article states:

For the first time in over 35 years, residents of the South Bronx have been invited to revisit the gutted ruins of a neighborhood landmark. This past weekend, the arts group No Longer Empty revealed its latest site-specific installation to the public, throwing open the doors to the Old Bronx Borough Courthouse, which has been boarded up since 1978. Saturday was family day, and the long-unused structure was filled with baby strollers, screaming children, teenagers with pitbulls, and curious locals. The curator of the exhibit was on hand to personally welcome visitors into the building’s lobby, while an artist conducted an intense purification ritual around her, pounding herbs into the floor and spraying spirits into the dark corners. Decades of dust, cobwebs, and rubble had been swept aside, and gusts of spring air carried a sense of rebirth through the space.

“It’s about bringing in the light and opening the windows,” said Lady K Fever, one of the participating artists. “It represents bringing light to a dark space. Because even in the daytime, this place has a dark energy.” As word of the exhibit spread through Morrisania and Melrose—the two Bronx neighborhoods that border the courthouse—residents began to trade stories of long-ago weddings, drunk driving arrests, and teenage run-ins that had taken place here. For a community that has only in recent years emerged from the fires, blight, and civic neglect that once scarred the South Bronx landscape, the courthouse’s reopening felt a bit like a homecoming. “It’s like they are seeing an old family member, long lost,” observed Regine Basha, who curated the exhibit for No Longer Empty. “This isn’t our building—it belongs to the community. We just set up the structures through which we could listen to the stories.”

Nathaniel Kensinger, the author of the article goes on further to say:

In contrast to these earlier, somewhat private explorations of the building, No Longer Empty’s exhibit offers up a much more community-based public art installation. Their group show, titled When You Cut into the Present the Future Leaks Out, features the work of 26 artists, many of them Bronx-based, and the participation of numerous neighborhood groups. The exhibit makes a staggering array of references to the area’s colorful cultural heritage, including the Bronx’s role in the birth of hip-hop and the popularization of graffiti, the local tradition of Puerto Rican-style casitas, and the renewal of the Bronx River. “This is a mingling of projects specific to the Bronx and more abstract elements,” said curator Regine Basha. “Some of it’s about storytelling and history, some of it’s about communing with the building, and some of it is just pure experiential sensorial immersion into the physicality of the space.” Walking through the courthouse today is a playful adventure, with sculpture, light, sound, and film scattered through every available corner of its first three levels.

The exhibit also delves into the troubled past of Melrose and Morrisania, with one piece based on Fort Apache, The Bronx—a controversial 1981 Paul Newman film about urban decay, police brutality and riots that was filmed at the nearby 42nd precinct—and a monumental new sculptural work by Bronx-born artist Abigail DeVille. Partially created from debris found in the building, the work presents a disturbing vision of dismembered body parts, dead Christmas trees, rubble and disorder, and was inspired by the artist’s childhood in the ruins that once surrounded the courthouse. “I remember when the Bronx was burning,” said one local resident, while considering the new buildings that now circle the courthouse. “It smelled like smoke everyday. There was nothing left around here. Now there are so many buildings we don’t even have a place to breathe. There’s nowhere left to build.”

Bartow-Pell Mansion; The Jewel Of The Northeast Bronx

A rear view of Bartow-Pell Mansion from inside the walled garden.
A rear view of Bartow-Pell Mansion from inside the walled garden.

Hidden from plain view, Bartow-Pell Mansion has been sitting inside what is now modern-day Pelham Bay Park—New York City’s largest park at 2,772 acres—since 1842 after 6 years of construction.

You’ve probably passed right by it along Shore Road as you pass Split Rock Golf Course taking the back road into Westchester or simply on your way to Orchard Beach.

It is a place steeped with history that not only occupies the mansion but the land it rests upon and even Pelham Bay Park itself.

The last remaining mansion and estate of about 20 that once occupied the park—until Robert Moses thought it would be best to just demolish them—preserves an important part of Bronx and national history.

Back in 1654, Thomas Pell purchased 9,000 acres from the Siwonay Native Americans stretching from most of the East Bronx up to Lower Westchester County.

Stepping into the house you immediately leave the 21st century and enter the early 19th century. The only traces you immediately notice that you’re still in 2015 is the obvious electrical outlets, lighting, and other modern conveniences that are hidden away.

Although no furniture or personal items survived from the Bartow-Pell family, the house has been meticulously restored down to the color of most rooms using paint analysis.

The furnishings have been selected from careful historical research of the era to recreate what the various rooms might have looked like and even some of the items are on loan from some of the city’s major museums.

All of the rooms along with  the mansion are enhanced by the simplicity of the grounds.

Behind Bartow-Pell you will find a beautifully landscaped, perfectly symmetrical yet simple, walled garden with a reflecting pool at its center.

The garden is quite special as it is one of only a few landmarked outdoor spaces in the city.

Beyond the garden you can take one of the paths which begins right at the burial ground of the Bartow-Pells and proceed along what’s left of Pelham Bay.

The bay was destroyed by Robert Moses when he created Orchard Beach by filling it in to create the crescent-shaped Bronx Riviera and further filling it in creating the expansive parking lot of the beach. This connected Hunter and Twin Islands to the mainland, although Twin Islands become actual islands during high tide.

As you walk along the trails through the estate, you can see the remnants of the other homes that occupied the lands of Pelham Bay Park.

There are so many hidden gems in The Bronx away from the eyes of the rest of New York City residents and the world but even to its own residents.

It’s easiest to reach Bartow-Pell by car but a hop on the 6 train to Pelham Bay and then the 45 Beeline bus gets you there just as well. I decided to take the train and then bike over which was a nice 15 minute ride at most, so you do have many options in getting there.

Things To Do

The mansion itself is only open to the public on Wednesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays from 12PM – 4PM with guided tours at 12:15PM, 1:15PM, 2:15PM, and 3:15PM. Admission to the mansion is $5 for adults and $3 for seniors and students. Children under 6 are free.

Admission to the grounds and garden are free and are open 7 days a week from 8:30AM and close at dusk.

Make sure to check out their website filled with a calendar of events as well as programming for all ages.

Being able to enjoy such historical landmark in our own backyard is truly a pleasure so make sure you stop on by and check out this gem!

42 Years Ago Today The Third Avenue El Took Its Last Ride

This 1926 photograph (credit unknown) shows the Third Avenue El at 149th Street and Third Ave (facing west towards Courtlandt Avenue) in Melrose. When the El was dismantled in Manhattan in 1955, this became the southernmost terminus of what remained of the El. Many of the buildings seen here along 149th Street still stand as does Immaculate Conception Church on 150th and Melrose Avenue.

Although long gone from our borough, the Third Avenue El continues to live in the consciousness of Bronxites near and far.

42 years ago today, the Third Avenue El ran for the last time and eventually dismantled leaving parts of Melrose without access to the subway and swaths of Morrisania, Tremont and other areas it ran through without any service at all.

An old map depicting existing and now extinct subway lines and stations from 1939. (Click to enlarge)
An old map depicting existing and now extinct subway lines and stations from 1939.

It was, perhaps, one of the biggest failures and mistakes of the MTA to get rid of an entire line but they were in line with all the rest of the city, state, and federal agencies that abandoned The Bronx.

Take a Ride Back in Time Along The Third Ave El Through The Bronx

Between 1970 and 1980, when the service ended, The Bronx had lost almost 400,000 people mostly in The South Bronx.

Today, our population has reached just shy of our historic high and the epicenter of the growth in population is the Melrose and Morrisania areas.

Over 5,000 apartments have been constructed and hundreds of homes as well in less than 10 years leaving these areas to suffer from lack of decent transportation and overcrowding of buses and subways.

Our Mayor recently announced that a new subway extension be created in Brooklyn, but what about bringing back the Third Ave El, perhaps, this time around underground?

Residents desperately need a better alternative than the congested streets and bus lines that run down Third Avenue nowadays.

What do you think about perhaps reviving the Third Ave Line?

Also, do you have memories of the Third Ave El?

UFO over the Bronx?  Not sure but last night folks were calling 911 to report a UFO over 149th Street near Hunts Point.  According to the Gothamist, “Another resident theorized that extraterrestrial visitors opted to hover over the Bronx in order “to study us.” “Maybe they want to learn to break dance.”

No Longer Bored Family Days:
Planting Our Stories

Come for an afternoon of free art-making and urban gardening and celebrate the opening of When You Cut into the Present the Future Leaks Out  at the Old Bronx Borough Courthouse.

Exhibiting artist and educator Lady K Fever uses performance, photography, painting and drawing to create abstract expressive artwork that incorporates traditional font lettering, poetry, and street art techniques weaved with biographic and fantastical imagery. During this free art-making workshop, participants will work together using storytelling, illustration and stencils to create art that explores personal associations and narratives in response to the Old Bronx Borough Courthouse.

Bronx artist Alicia Grullón and the Kelly Street Garden will lead an urban gardening workshop as part of Grullón ‘s project Percent For Green, a social practice piece that looks at green issues, and uses art and people’s experiences to make the conversation around climate change and sustainability accessible to a wider public. Through a hands-on workshop, community members will practice a tangible and easy form of urban gardening and walk away with a self-watering herb garden!

Saturday, April 25, 1:00-4:00pm

No Longer Bored is a program designed for children and families to discover and explore No Longer Empty’s art exhibition through activities centered on inquiry, reflection, creativity and participation. 300 High School Students Stand ‘For Epic Impact’ At 6th Annual Monroe College Male Empowerment Seminar

DSC_0533

After last month’s Female Empowerment for High School students at Monroe College, yesterday it was the male high school students’ turn with their day of empowerment.

One teacher at the event said that one of her students came up to her at the conclusion of the day and said he would come to school on time and every day from now on.

The following is from Monroe College on the event:

Inspired by keynotes from renowned author, educator, and TV commentator Dr. Steve Perry and special guest WCBS-TV news anchor Maurice Dubois, as well as remarks from achieving freshmen from the Monroe College Empowerment Institute (EI), more than three-hundred high school boys left the college’s sixth annual male empowerment seminar with a renewed sense of resolve and purpose.

Thursday’s event in the Mintz Auditorium on the Monroe College campus, dubbed Stand… for Epic Impact!, included teen boys from ten Bronx high schools: Bronx Latin, Alfred E. Smith HS, Wings Academy, Mott Hall NYC, New Visions Charter HS for the Humanities, Truman HS, Urban Assembly School for Careers in Sports, Academy for Language and Technology, HS for Media Communications, and Mott Hall BX.

During the four-plus hour seminar, the young men had the opportunity to speak with mentors from the worlds of business, education, criminal justice, and more about what it takes to be successful.

They also heard Dr. Perry talk about seizing opportunities and realizing potential.  “I came here today because I believe in you,” he said.  “There’s something beautiful and capable within you.  But we can believe it all we want, but you have to have the courage to show it.”

After talking about how his parents sacrificed so their children could achieve in life and how he once worked flipping burgers in a fast food joint, Mr. Dubois told the young men, “When people are complimentary to me and say what I do looks natural, you guys know it isn’t natural,” he said.  “It’s not natural.  Whatever it is, you’ve got to work at it and perfect it and keep honing it and honing it.  Whether building bridges, making speeches, or doing artwork, you have to work at it every single day.  There’s no time to sit back.”

At the end of the speeches, the mentors pinned custom-designed EI pins on the teenagers, along with a pledge to develop ‘competence, confidence’ and character.’

“The statistics show alarming dropout rates of young men of color,” said Dr. Cecil Wright, who founded Male Empowerment at Monroe, “and the best way we know to combat those is through mentorship and role modeling.  I have no doubt that when the event ended today, many of these high school boys will be motivated to attend college and lead productive lives. “

The Bronx Is Blooming At The New York Botanical Garden

20150421_143210

This week I decided to take a quick trip to check out all the cherry blossoms and various trees, as well flowers that were blooming at The New York Botanical Garden and I surely wasn’t disappointed.

I ended up spending a good 4 hours at the garden just walking around and enjoying the sights of the lush, green grass and the trees either in almost full bloom or starting to do so.

With weekend temps in the 60’s and mostly clear skies, it’s going to be a perfect time to head over to NYBG and enjoy the various areas of the garden, including Cherry Valley which is just exploding with beautiful blossoms.

Below are some pictures of what the garden looked like on Tuesday and after the warmth and rain since then, I can only imagine the splendor this weekend so make sure you head on over there before the blooms are gone!

Oh and we’re less than a month away from the Frida Kahlo exhibition at the garden!
