First we heard about the loft building at 2417 Third Avenue in Port Morris being under contract for $37 million, then we reported about the “Banksy” building being developed into market-rate rental apartments. Last year, on October 21st, the infamous street artist known as Banksy struck in the Melrose neighborhood of The Bronx on E 153rd Street (just down the block from me) where Elton and 3rd Avenues meet prompting thousands of fans to trek to the area and catch a glimpse of his controversial ‘Ghetto 4 Life’ piece. The 4 story buildings have been vacant for decades (close to 30 years) with the exception of the retail spaces on the ground floor. Now the owner is beginning the process of converting the top 3 floors into market rate residential units.

WalkNYC street signs have finally landed in The Bronx providing residents, employees and visitors of the Melrose and Mott Haven area with a map to the immediate area. The signs, which debuted last year in Chinatown, Herald Square/34th Street, Long Island City and Prospect Heights and Crown Heights, provide pedestrians with a wealth of information, including average walking distance to various landmarks and subway stations.
Tomorrow, Tuesday October 7th, Bronx resident William Casari, Assistant Professor (and College Archivist and Instruction Librarian) at Hostos Community College will be presenting on Hostos Community College and its history in the South Bronx. The event is FREE and open to the public, just make sure to RSVP.
There’s no stopping development and construction in the Melrose neighborhood of The Bronx. From the early planning stages, to actual construction, a quick walk through the area reveals a flurry of activity in the borough’s fastest growing neighborhood and 3rd fastest in the city.
655 Morris Avenue at E 153rd Street is the latest development under construction and will rise 15 stories providing 175 affordable units for low and middle income families.
Our friends over at YIMBY have revealed plans filed for one of the last remaining tracts of land in the Melrose Commons redevelopment area to be developed by Briarwood and Phipps Housing in conjunction with The Bridge. The development has changed considerably since it was first announced 4 years ago and probably the most significant change, besides the renderings, is that it will contain 60 units in a separate yet connected building of supportive housing for low-income veterans (Check out the old renderings here).
WHEDco and Bronx Health Reach invites you, on Thursday, September 25th from 5:30PM – 7:00PM at DreamYard Project located at 1085 Washington Avenue (at 165th Street), to learn about the findings of the survey and give feedback on their findings.
As many Melrose residents and those who work here may recall, last year from Fall ’13 to Spring ’14 WHEDco and Bronx Health Reach conducted a survey which collected data from 1,000 people who live and or work within Melrose Zip Codes of 10451, 10455 and 10456. The survey asked many questions from health issues to safety to what types of amenities the community would like to see in the area.
Alfredo Theibaud, owner of the coquito helado dynasty known as Delicioso Coco Helado was killed in a tragic freak accident this morning as he was opening up the gates to his business and they came down crashing on him killing him on the scene.

YoungWoo & Associates has partnered up with the San Francisco based Bristol Group, a real estate investment and development firm, to restore the Bronx General Post Office to its former glory.
Not only will the exterior once again shine gloriously but the firms will also preserve and restore the landmarked lobby, including the 13 Ben Shahn murals. “We are firmly committed to honoring the building’s historic legacy and working with the USPS to ensure that the interior landmarked lobby, including “Resources of America”—the 13 murals created by the great American artists, Ben Shahn and Bernarnda Bryson—are honored, restored to their original glory and preserved for all to enjoy” said Mr. Zucker.
Orva Shoes, a popular Manhattan-based footwear retailer, is moving in adjacent to Carter’s Children (which is scheduled to open this month) right in the Hub, the retail heart of Melrose and the South Bronx — an area that sees over 250,000 people a day.
