New York, March 20, 2015 – No Longer Empty (NLE) is pleased to present When You Cut into the Present the Future Leaks Out at the Old Bronx Borough Courthouse. Curated by Regine Basha for NLE, the exhibition is one of seven projects to receive the Neighborhood Challenge Award. Built 1905–1914 and attributed to architects Michael John Garvin and Oscar Florianus Bluemner, the Courthouse, once boasting granite floors, lavish stairways, and bronze doors, remains adorned by a statue of Lady Justice. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Bronx County, the Beaux Arts-style building has been shuttered for 37 years.

About 3 years ago, Welcome2TheBronx wrote about the possibility of having the Metro North rail yards in Melrose at 149th Street decked over much like the Hudson Rail Yards and have it developed into office space and affordable housing. Today, Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr made a similar proposal along with two other Bronx locations stating that since Queens didn’t want it to happen at the Sunnyside yards, The Bronx would be happy to take those monies.
The other 2 locations identified are the 4 train rail yards by Lehman College in Bedford Park just west of the Grand Concourse and the 1 train rail yards just west of Broadway between Riverdale and Kingsbridge.
Many Bronxites and artists have been talking about the new arts organization, BxArts Factory, since we made the announcement last month on the inception of the this endeavor. Now, today, in anticipation of their launch party tonight at the Bronx Museum, they’ve revealed to Welcome2TheBronx their location.
The BxArts Factory will located in the nationally landmarked Brook Avenue Gardens building on 148th Street and Brook Avenue in Mott Haven at the border of Melrose.
A report by investment firm Ariel Property Advisors recently reported that The Bronx saw a record $2.4 billion in sales of residential properties. Now, in an interview with the firm’s president, Shimon Shkury, reveals to New York Real Estate Journal that Melrose led the borough in such sales with
St. Mary’s Park in Mott Haven, the recreational heart for thousands of residents of the South Bronx, is getting a face-lift thanks to $1.5 million in funds allocated by New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito who’s district covers the park.
The monies will be used to reconstruct the western playground area along St. Ann’s Avenue and the community is being invited to contribute their visions and ideas for their park on Wednesday, March 4th between 6pm – 8pm at Heketi Community Charter School.

Once again, The Bronx Documentary Center will bring to our borough a powerful exhibition — this time on the all too familiar realities of gun violence and its impact on our communities and youth — via the photographic works of Carlos Javier Ortiz, who has documented our nation’s plague in Chicago and Philadelphia over the course of seven years.
This past Tuesday, January 20th, YoungWoo and Associates finally unveiled a more detailed look at the full plans for the restoration and development of the landmark Bronx General Post Office at a hearing with New York City’s Landmark Preservation Commission.
2015 will give rise to new developments in Melrose, finally filling in the last remaining vacant lots as construction projects move forward. 3160 Park Avenue, which is bounded by 161st Street, Courtlandt Avenue and 160th Street, will go from a community eyesore in the heart of the Bronx’s Civic Center to an 11 story mixed-use 185,000 square foot residential building (including 21,400 square feet of ground floor commercial/retail space).
Today we received word from Henry Weinstein, the owner of the landmark Old Bronx Courthouse, who confirmed that not only are major renovations underway at the treasured building in Melrose but it will be the host of a major exhibition by the organization No Longer Empty.
Sold earlier this year for $19 million, the Bronx General Post Office is on its way to a new life as new owners Youngwoo & Associates have filed plans to begin redevelopment of the landmarked property. Retail, office spaces, restaurants and rooftop terraces appear to be on their way for the iconic building.
